CANVI CLIMÀTICDescripció:
In the context of accelerating climate change and increasingly frequent extreme heat events, outdoor thermal stress poses a significant health risk to pedestrians and outdoor workers. Transitional spaces, where located between air-conditioned indoor environments and thermally demanding outdoor settings, act as essential thermal buffers. These spaces can help mitigating heat stress by providing shelter from direct solar radiation. However, current static thermal comfort models fail to accurately predict human thermal responses in such environments due to the transient nature of moving from a hot outdoor space to a shaded area. To address this gap, dynamic physiological and psychological models must be developed in real-world scenarios.
Objectius:
The primary aim of this master's thesis is to define and validate the experimental methodology for development of the dynamic thermal comfort model for spaces. Specifically, this thesis seeks to: 1) Develop an experimental protocol for collecting microclimatic data and capturing participants' transient physiological responses. 2) Execute a field study within a selected transitional space in Terrassa to verify the feasibility and reliability of the proposed methodological framework. 3) Analyze the collected data to quantify the potential of transitional spaces in mitigating heat stress risks for pedestrians and outdoor workers.
Tasques a realitzar / Característiques:
The master student will participate in a three-stage workflow, designed to validate the experimental methodology for transient thermal comfort. The process begins with pre-experimental, where the student will assist in the precise calibration of instrumentation and define detailed procedure for the field tests to ensure scientific reproducibility. Subsequently, the student will participate in the experiment campaign, organizing and conducting field measurements with a small group of volunteers to test. During these field trials, the candidate will monitor the microclimate of the transitional space by utilizing Delta Ohm stations and capture the surface temperature by FLIR Thermal Cameras. Concurrently, the student will manage or join the physiological monitoring of human subjects by deploying iButton Data Loggers to capture skin temperature changes and Polar H10 sensors to record heart rate data. The final phase focuses on initial data processing, where the student will align dispersed microclimate data points with physiological data and conduct data quality reviews to ensure the reliability of the collected datasets for future analysis.
