The University of Nottingham is offering a fully-funded 3 year PhD programme in partnership with industry to address key challenges in manufacturing engineering. The candidate will be based at the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology at The University of Nottingham. Equipped with state-of-the-art purpose-built facilities, the UTC offers a world-class environment for the realisation of high impact research projects. Candidates from mechanical, industrial, aerospace, robotics or other relevant disciplines are encouraged to attend the talk. Tuition fees are covered by the scholarship and an annual stipend (tax free) of between £16,000-19,000 will be provided.

The main topics presented in the talk will be:

  • Brief introduction of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in manufacturing and on-wing technology from the University of Nottingham.
  • Description high impact Rolls-Royce research projects being developed at the UTC.
  • Presentation of fully-funded industrial PhD positions starting the following academic years and possible future final year Master projects.
  • Open discussion session with a current PhD research student involved in a Rolls-Royce project.

Presenter: Oriol Gavalda

Oriol is a PhD research student in the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) at The University of Nottingham, currently working on the understanding of a machining process of composite materials for high temperature applications.  He graduated from Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 2014 and got his Masters degree in structures and materials for aerospace applications from the Universite de Bordeaux. Oriol was involved in the aero-engine manufacturing sector doing his master project and internship with Safran; working with composite materials for rocket nozzles and surfaces treatments for aluminium alloys.

Rolls-Royce UTC director: Prof. Dragos Axinte

Dragos Axinte is a professor from the University of Nottingham, and Director of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology. With over 100 scientific publications in prestigious journals and more than 20 patents with Rolls-Royce, Dragos has focused his research on advanced manufacturing techniques and robotics for repair applications.

Dragos is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Fellow of the International Academy of Production Engineering (FCIRP) and Associate Editor for the International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture (highest impact factor in manuf. engineering).
